Emergency Room shows power of antioxidants: "... all general surgical patients who enter the ICUs for a minimum of 48 hours receive either standard amounts of the vitamins or IV supplementation with vitamin C in combination with vitamin E within 24 hours of admission. Dr. Nathens notes in a recent news release that vitamins C and E can limit tissue damage and help critically ill patients recover from their injuries. A number of preliminary studies have shown that supplementation with these vitamins may prevent the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)."

FEMALE HORMONES. From a letter to the editor of a newspaper: I noted your recent front page article regarding the study of hormones made from pregnant mare's urine which, as might be predicted, showed increased risk for human women. It's no surprise to one bio-molecular expert I asked that a combination of horse estrogens and so-called `progestins,' neither naturally occurring in any human woman, has been found to be associated with higher risk of breast cancer in human women than the increased risk of breast cancer in human women caused by horse estrogens alone. After all, two out-of-place molecules are very likely to cause more trouble than just one. What is a surprise is that responsible researchers continue to waste taxpayer (and other) dollars investigating such unnatural `treatments.' When will women rebel and insist that human hormones be researched in humans?Merrily Manthey, M.S., Board of Trustees, Harborview Medical Center, merrily@ msn.com, -- Well Being Journal
Folic acid deficiency may be related to functional and psychic deterioration in elderly. The deterioration of functional and mental capacity is one of the major problems of the elderly. This deterioration may be caused or worsened by folate deficiency. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition (1996;;126:1992-1999) describes an important investigation that may help untold numbers of families who are caring for their loved elders. The aim of the investigation was to analyze the relationship between mental and functional capacities and folate status in a group of 177 elderly Spanish people. Folate deficiency is common in the Spanish population. In this study, 48.6% of the elderly subjects had folate intakes below recommended values (200 microg/day), 34.9% had serum concentrations < 14 nmol/L and 6.6" had <360 nmol/L erythrocyte folate. The conclusion was "there is evidence to suggest that the folate status of the elderly should be monitored and, if possible, improved." Ortega RM, Manas LR, Andres P, et al.
